Chuck, "L*" (pronounced "L star"), is a more-or-less average-luminosity. Our Milky Way is an L* galaxy.
(L* is actually a parameter in the luminosity function of galaxies, which is just a fancy way of saying, the number of galaxies out there at each given luminosity.)
